Artist Statements
Grid Drawing Portrait:
My piece is a portrait of an Asian man that is close up and has ear piercings and his head is shaved on the right side. The most prominent element in my piece is value. The most obvious element I used is contrast.
I created my art by creating a grid and then mapping out where everything is. After that is done I shaded, Finally, I added my contrast.
My inspiration for this piece was a picture that we had to choose to draw, I picked this picture because he looks like the men from B.T.S. The emotion I tried to convey was to make him look the picture, he looks focused and serious.
My goal as an artist was to draw this picture successfully as possible meaning draw what I see and not what I think I see and shade to make it as realistic as possible. I did not reach my goal because I did not finish it in time because I spent to much time on one thing for too long.
By creating this piece I learned how to do hair. Overall I like my piece because even though I did not finish it. I will use what I learned on this piece for future works because I think I will need to know how to do hair and do it properly.
Cross Contour Line Drawing:
My piece shows boxing gloves. My piece shows color, value from dark to light. I used scribbling and other lines to make my piece pop out. The elements that are most obvious in my work in value, color, and line.
The media I used for my artwork is pencil then I went over it in sharpie. The techniques I used is putting the scribbling in and then adding other lines to show the direction of the form. The process I did was outlining the gloves in scribbling and then the dark areas. Secondly, I put lines the direction of where the form of the gloves went, making sure to leave the white parts white. When I did all that to the whole piece I then added color making sure not to over do it but just enough to tell it's not a flat piece and my artwork has value.
The thing that inspired me to draw this specific image is because I actually box. Boxing and my coach and the people in the gym with me supported me and still do through thick and thin. My artwork expresses a personal issue, the emotions I tried to convey in my artwork is boxing is always there for me in the light and the dark.
My goals as an artists are to not create flat images, to make my artwork have emotions that when you look at it you will find the emotion in it. This piece is really on a personal level and this piece really did help me reach some of my goals because the emotion of it is like its in an old gym and the gloves are hanging, for me that emotion is a way to release anger, other times it's to prove how strong I am and how stronger I need to become.
I learned how to add other things in to create balance from this artwork. This is actually the final piece I had imagined, because I wanted gloves in like an old gym. It will influence my future pieces by creating my artwork meaningful to family, friends that are like family that have been with me through thick and thin.
Oil Pastel Texture Piece:
My piece is from a movie/TV series named batman. In this case it's a game that he is present in, Batman: Arkham Asylum. My artwork is of Scarecrow, creating him by using oil pastels. The elements that are most obvious in my artwork are lines, value, and color. The principles that are used in this artwork are contrast and balance.
This piece was created using oil pastels. I applied mainly heavy pressure to make the two colors blend well. Especially using white mainly on one side of the face. Putting white first then the light colors and started to blend it to where it needed to be. I added white and expanded the area I applied it to blend in colors for later, then I added the light colors, after that I added the medium colors, finally, black is for last or any other really dark colors.
What inspired me was the video game Batman: Arkham Asylum that my uncle plays and Scarecrow who almost never shows his face. The emotions that I tried to create was this person becoming something so evil yet so amazing at the same time.
My goals as an artist is to make my artwork as realistic as possible. In some ways yes this piece did help. It helped because it brought forth a emotional that I was feeling when I created this piece.
What I learned about creating this piece is that I have to use my time wisely so I have enough time to add the details that take the most time. This is somewhat how I imagined my piece would turn out. I have just the need to finish it in my free time. This piece has influenced my future artwork because I am already thinking of something a little dark along the lines for the next project.
Foreshortening:
My subject matter is a mermaid that I have created. For this Foreshortening project I have made the tail bigger and diagonal from the bottom to make it seem like she is coming out from the side. The elements that are most obvious in my piece are line and value.
The media that I used to create my piece is pencil. How I created my piece is first I started with the tail, then the body followed by the arms. I changed what I did in my rough draft from her right hand going out to her holding a trident in my final. When I had everything drawn out I shaded the body adding heavy pressure where the shadows would be but keeping it lighter since its the body. Then I went on to the hair and had help from the teacher on how I would do it since the mermaid is under water. Once I got that mapped out to the direction the hair would go I finally got to design the tail.
What inspired my to do this piece is I have done a mermaid in the past. This piece does neither express a social or personal issue. The emotions that I was trying to convey that mermaid is the only one in the sea and her weapon, the trident, and the mermaid is on her own to survive.
My goal as an artist is create every piece I make realistic. It kind of did, but not really. The best thing that's probably realistic in the piece is the trident and the tail because that's the areas I spent most on putting more value in.
What I learned creating this artwork is the actual project because I had no idea what foreshortening was up until this point so I got a different view of art. This kind of is the final piece I imagined but I am debating on weather or not I should add a background. This will influence my future pieces because I will want to create something realistic as possible.
In the Master's Style Painting:
My artwork is of a woman dancing at a Jarabe Tapatío. How I wanted her to look like is her twirling and being happy giving the bright colors I gave to her dress and the facial expression I was trying to convey. The elements I used was texture for her ribbons that are attached to her hair. The principles that I used was Asymmetrical balance. The media that I created my artwork from is acrylic paint.
I chose expressionism so I used were mainly the larger brushes with large amounts of paint to not really blend in, making those big, bold, brush strokes. The person that inspired my artwork was my dad. My artwork does express a personal issue. The emotions that I was trying to convey was a deeper meaning than what is actually there. The background is dark and the girl is bright so through the tough times she is still plowing through it and still happy.
My goals as an artist is to try put emotion into it that not only I can see but have a deeper meaning as well. Yes I reached my goal somewhat. I feel like I did reach my goal with this piece even if I am the only one that can tell those emotions that I was trying to covey.
What I learned about creating this piece is I have to have patience. It is not the final I imagined. I messed up her nose and was trying to fix it but I didn't let the paint dry enough. This piece will influence future artworks by letting my paint dry if i want to add something else to the part that I have painted.
Polynesian Tiki Sculpture:
Art Show Piece:
My artwork this time is of Ku, the god of war, is my subject matter, based on Polynesian culture and what they used to create things only what they had and made stuff into only what they saw. The title of this piece in general is called Polynesian Tiki Sculpture. The elements that most obvious in my piece is negative space. The principles that are most obvious in my artwork are non because I have no finished at all.
The media that I used to create my sculpture is clay, using slab and coil method. Slipping and scoring on coils to make mouth, eyes, and other features. Using wooden tools to make the uneven edges straight and crisp. Drawing the outlines if where the mouth, eyes, and eyebrows. Slipping and scoring a coil on the eyes after cutting out where the eyes are. Putting slip on to make it blend smoother into the eye to make it one.
What inspired my the create this particular tiki god was his features. This sculpture has no personal or social meaning behind it. The emotion I was trying to convey was menacing. Ku, the god of war is supposed to have a big, menacing face. I tried to show the god having a menacing face to make it obvious that this sculpture is the god of war.
The goals as an artist is to make my artwork full. Meaning that there is not a lot of negative space. No. This sculpture, this project did not help me reach my goals at all. I have too much negative space. I had higher hopes in my artwork.
What I learned is I have to use my time wisely. This is not the final piece I had imagined. It wasn't because I had wanted to more stuff on the sculpture. I wanted to add more designs on the back and to make it more menacing. It will influence my future artwork pieces by using my times wisely. By using that time I will be able to finish but also look over to what I have already or to add.
My subject matter is a boxer in the ring and a coach outside. My artwork looks like looks like a boxer in the ring throwing a punch while a coach observes his boxer, while around them is light but then goes to be darker. The elements that are most obvious in my piece is line, and shape. The principles that are most obvious is is balance, movement.
The media that I used to create my piece is water color. The tools that I used are the flat brushes and the round brushes. The process that I used to create my piece is first I drew it on two pieces of paper that I taped together. Next, I transferred my drawing to my final. After that, I did the background, when I did the background though I added more water then color and when it was still wet I blew on it to make the water and color that it had in it to go different directions.
The person that inspired my piece is my boxing coach. He has saved my from so much bad things that have happened in my life. This artwork does express personal issue of mine. The emotions that I tried to convey is that the light is outshining the darkness and how boxing saved me.
My goals as an artist is to put emotion into my piece and hopefully the viewers that see my piece can understand what i'm trying to communicate. This piece did help my reach my goal. It helped because some people got the meaning but not everybody and i'm okay with not everyone getting my meaning.
What I learned while creating this piece is that I have to patience. This is not the final piece I imagined. I messed up with the water and color running down the paper. This piece will influence my future pieces because even though I messed up it has a deeper meaning than all my other pieces. This piece goes along with the boxing gloves that I did as well.
Watercolor Landscape Painting:
My Artwork looks like a cherry blossom tree growing on a cliff. My subject matter is a tree. The elements that are most obvious is value and line. The most obvious principles is rhythm and movement.
The media I used to create this piece is watercolor. The round brush is used for fine lines. The flat brushes are used for the background, wet on wet. I added more water than paint just to get the color in. When it was all dried I then went back and added more color than water for details, wet on dry.
What inspired my was Japan and there cherry blossoms. There life is very short so when they bloom they express how precious life is because they fall short when they bloom. This does not express a personal or a social issue. What I was trying to express was to create the background a bit darker than the tree to show that the tree is blooming in the darkness.
My goals as an artist is to try and covey some emotion through my artwork. This piece kind of did. The reason is because I wanted to finish the roots coming down the cliff and even though pink and blue are light in this piece I wanted to but a darker value in them.
What I learned is that I have to be patient and use my time wisely. This kind of is the final piece I imagined. I wan ted to make the colors darker around the tree. This will influence my future pieces by having a meaning behind my piece makes it looks better than just drawing a piece and completing it with no meaning.
